HISTORY OF THE TOUR

The inaugural ABQ Mid Mod Home Tour took place in 2019. The idea emerged from founders Ted Janka and his partner Chuck Honse's experience in organizing similar mid-century modern home tours in Palm Springs. They also collaborated with Modern Albuquerque to bring local expertise developed through historical research and a network of architects and preservationists.

After the pandemic in 2020 and organizational restructuring, the ABQ MidMod Home Tour finally returned in 2024 under the umbrella of NM Modernism. The third and most successful tour to date took place in April 2026, setting the stage for what will now be a biennial event.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE TOUR

This tour provides attendees exclusive access to a curated collection of exceptional modernist homes, starting at a featured commercial or institutional building. NM Modernism rigorously vets each property based on architectural design, historical significance, and preservation. The resulting lineup honors the era's leading local architects and builders with a showcase of structures that have been beautifully maintained or masterfully renovated.

Beyond the residence itself, guests will experience stunning landscaping, tailored interior designs, and curated furnishings that reflect the homeowners' distinct personalities while perfectly complementing the architecture.

After on-site registration, attendees begin a self-guided driving tour. Each home has docent volunteers and the homeowners available to answer questions about the property, offering unique insight into the home's history, furnishings, design, and neighborhood.

The tour attracts a wide variety of attendees—mid-century modern enthusiasts, architects, designers, artists, historians, students, and anyone else wanting a peek at a selection of hidden gems in Albuquerque's post-war neighborhood enclaves.
